British jazz singer Alison Burns has been awarded the Brand Laureate International Brand Personality Award by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation – dubbed the Grammy awards for branding – for her success in music and iconic status. Past recipients of the award have included Nelson Mandela, Hillary Clinton, Aretha Franklin, the late Steve Jobs and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Born in Scotland, Alison Burns gave up a career as a high-flying corporate lawyer to pursue her dream of becoming a jazz singer after being discovered by TV host Sir Michael Parkinson. Following a move to California she went on to release three hit albums followed by extensive tours of China, Australia, North America, Italy and the UK.

Speaking at the award presentation at the Penang Island Jazz Festival, ABPF President Dr KKJohan said: “Armed with a belief that life is bigger than the normal ‘rat race’, Alison Burns has pursued her dreams; her spirit and determination have seen her through to be the reknowned artist she is today.”

Burns who is currently performing in Malaysia as part of a two-month tour told the audience at the ceremony:

“I’m delighted to be receiving this award. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to tour the world doing something I love – singing jazz. I’d also like to thank my fans both here in Asia and around the world for supporting me over the years.”

As an award recipient Burns receives a 24-karat gold plated trophy adorned with Swarvoski crystals and signed by former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
